Vista Point Project

Ektachrome E-100 Color Slide Film, Projector

The Vista Point Project exists as two slide shows. The first, Overview, is an ongoing contemporary survey of the 135 scenic overlooks managed by Caltrans across the state of California, of which 21 were documented ahead of my thesis exhibition. This visual study shows a diversity of infrastructure, local usage, and upkeep represented by the Vista Points closest to the Bay Area that point to a history of implementation that pre-dates current oversight. The second, Time-lapse, utilizes the mechanics of an analog carousel slide projector to show 80 slides made at the Richmond-San Rafael Vista Point with photographs taken at ~5 minute intervals over 6 hours from a fixed position. They are shown in the gallery at the pace of a mid-20th century home slide carousel, satirizing the readymade time-lapse function built into most smartphone cameras today.
